Kinja is doing this fun thing where I can’t reply to a comment that I access via the notifications. If I follow a notification link I can’t reply, I can only reply if I go back to the article and find the comment.

Ah, so it’s the permalink that’s doing it. Good catch. Yeah, looks like the same is true for editing comments. Earlier today, I was frantically trying to fix a typo before the editing window expired, and I kept trying to reload the page, click on the timestamp, etc... I think you’re right- I’m pretty sure I had to find the comment manually in order to get it to work.
Y’know, permalinks have been messing with other stuff too, like the embedded hyperlinks that we’ve been having trouble with for so long. I thought they had finally fixed those embeds, but it turns out that if I revisit an article via a comment permalink, the main post is missing some content.

Okay, you sound like you know something. You’re elected. Suit up and get in there. Find someone to fix it.

Yeah, I’ve seen that. Was able to reply after starring the comment. Who knows how that makes any sense.

When it happens to me, I find that just refreshing the page fixes it. It only happens on chrome on my laptop. The issue doesn’t pop up in Chrome on my iPhone.

Hm, this might be related:
So we noticed that permalinks seemed to be triggering the problem. But one of Borsuq’s posts this morning seems to be doing it too. As of right now, this post has no comments, and it won’t let me compose a comment either. I’ve been able to comment on other posts this morning, though. One of the things that makes this one different is that the web address looks like a permalink because the post has no title or text content to create a normal-looking web address.

Me too. Nothing helps. Logging off and back on did nothing. I can sometimes reply to an original post, but when someone replies to me I can’t reply to them.

News from Ernie: They have a pretty good idea of what might be causing it, and should have it fixed next week.

I guess the real question is what happens when they remove this Jenga piece.

OOOOOH guess what I found?
Ok, so remember when our comment permalinks included part of the comment’s text in the web address? Well, somebody just starred one of my old comments , and I took that opportunity to see what would happen if I clicked “reply”.
It worked! Even though I followed a permalink, it was one of the old permalinks that had part of the comment’s text included in the web address. Clicking “reply” actually opened up a reply frame. It seems that for whatever reason, Kinja needs to see some of the post’s text in the web address in order to load features like embedded links and reply frames.
Weird. I’m gonna send this to the Kinja team right away.
